Amos Adams Lawrence (July 31, 1814 – August 22, 1886), the son of famed philanthropist Amos Lawrence, was a key figure in the United States abolition movement in the years leading up to the Civil War, and instrumental in the establishment of the University of Kansas and Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Biography[edit]

Lawrence was born in Groton, Massachusetts[1] or Boston[2][3] and educated at Groton Academy (now Lawrence Academy at Groton) and Harvard College. He then entered business for himself as a commission merchant and eventually became owner of Ipswich Mills, the largest producer of knit goods in the country located in Ipswich, Massachusetts. In addition, he was a devout member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Boston, where he met and married his wife, Sarah Appleton (a relative of Samuel Appleton), as well as a trustee of Massachusetts General Hospital and president of the Young Men's Benevolent Society.

Lawrence was radicalized by living through the Anthony Burns affair in the spring of 1854: "[W]e went to bed one night old fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs & waked up stark mad Abolitionists."[4] Lawrence became a key figure in the United States abolition movement in the years leading up to the Civil War, during which he contributed large amounts of capital to the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company and John Brown's abolitionism, played a major role in the crucial border state of Kansas (see Kansas-Nebraska Act), and also contributed to funds for the colonization of free negroes in Liberia. He contributed personally for the famous Sharp rifles, which, packed as “books” and “primers,” were shipped to Kansas and afterwards came into the hands of Brown. During the contest in Kansas, Lawrence wrote frequently to President Franklin Pierce (his mother's nephew) in behalf of the free-state settlers; and when John Brown was arrested he appealed to the governor of Virginia to secure for him a lawful trial. He repeatedly urged the necessity of offering no armed resistance to the Federal government, and he deplored Brown's fanaticism. In 1858 and 1860 he was the Whig candidate for governor of Massachusetts

"Inside The Drake"

Inside The Drake
   dedicated to Dad,
for what he knows and
    cannot say --- with Love

To the Slotnick Cousins... and associates.

The dry wind blows in
from off the Lake,
as we sit and muse
inside the Drake.

I ponder on our World
to really help the fate
of wealth and worth,
as I sit above my plate
of seafood from off the Cape.
Our U.S. country can be great -
A land and globe of hope
and care. Yes, we can sate
the greed and hurt upon our
kin, as We set up The Jewish State.

Inside the slotted windows' grate,
we ponder on what comes and goes on
outside upon the Drive and on the Lake.
We even see the coming of Dawn,
As we sit inside The Drake,
and of people's wishes for success
that they be given one good break.
We used our brains and God-given skills,
of course we also had our thrills, of
lesser men we did not shame them
for their weakness or their pains.

To stoke the furnace of industries' grate
We pushed and shoved our way above
to mold and form our world's fate.
We may grow old and hold our shames
inside our hearts which will not break
no matter what others do or say,
As we sit in The Drake.

And so sadly, one succumbed
to the cold and silent wind from off the Lake
Oh!, Our friend, you were brave
and smart, but couldn't leave
from inside The Drake
in time to find our secure
home and place outside our
native Polish homes,
an out and by our new found cape
of God and Cod, East from the Lake and shore
our place where wind were ocean-salt,
they filled us up with strength
to keep us going and to take
mishpocha (family) to the top.
... And So our spirit and our
hopes still sit with you,
we wish you well, Meyer,
inside the Drake.

First composed Friday night of the U.S.A. Labor Day weekend, 2010, while walking along Fisherman's Beach, Swampscott, Massachusetts few years ago, after seeing the middle star of Orion's belt, of the constellation Orion, that night (The middle star of Orion's belt is called 'Alnilam' in Arabic and the three stars of Orion's Belt are called often in Germany the Three Kings and in Latin America the Three Marys); and, finished being written at The Cape Cod Room restaurant, of The Drake Hotel, Chicago, Illinois four weeks later.

"WE THREE KINGS OF MONEY ARE"(To the tune of 'We Three Kings of Orient Are', a common Christmastime song)

We three kings of money are
traveling by night we help all afar,
Rosenfield and Linsey and Lansky
following yonder star, ... ar.
Star of wonder, star of night,
star of perfect beauty bright,
westward leading still proceeding,
onward to a perfect light, ... night.

In the year 2010, when San Francisco's

As did its nearby valleys north and south,

Once Upon A Time in the East, or Comin' over the Gap

Prelude-
Last Night in my genial Hometown of Boston I watched the Movie "X-Men ..." after walking down Boylston Street and inside the edge of the Boston Public Garden. Charles Sumner's statue was looking towards what is now the Four Seasons Hotel, so I stopped in front of the statue and ate some delicious chicken vegetable tortilla soup given to me quite unexpectedly by the kindest of folk at a restaurant down in Providence, Rhode Island, near the Amtrak. I had ordered only a coffee and some vegetable spring roll with my meager funds, but to my surprise they gave me two large containers full of vegies and chicken as I was rushing to catch a ride Back to the Beantown. Voila! Merci Beaucoup.   I do think it was chicken tortilla Soupe.  Thank you all and all the Alexanders, Als and Alejandros now... and forever. PEACE, Gutes Essen + Shalom!

Once upon a time there was shining gold hot light and smoke BURNING INSIDE the Town of Boston. All was deep. All was intense, intense and hot burning - TRUE. And, there he was railing against or to God and against the Devil. He stood deep and tense, Cotton Mather - the Mathers. Pure white starched collars (see The Barnacle poem of Oct. 12, 2010), the Mathers against all and the World - Oh. Increase! Cotton! ------ Sunday the white clouds and blue ocean sky, and sailboats in The HARBOR. Who knows the depth of those days and Nights of Smallpox, of smoke, of heat. A Hell or No. Oh BOSTON!    There they came.   AND NOW THEY STAND IN THE DARK OF THE DAMP NIGHT, last Evening. SENATOR Charles Sumner, and Wendell Phillips, both behind the Reverend CHANNING'S STATUE, A SUMMIT OF GRANITE.
"WE NEVER SHALL EVER BUY AND SELL MEN AND WOMEN." THANK GOD AND and Nancy, my NANCY and her family and especially the late Abe and Lee. I guess the Slotnick/Linsey/Rosenfield men are rather slow.

Coming up and OVER THE CUMBERLAND GAP

BY TRAIN we headed down into the deep land under the Mountains of Pennsylvania of vast dark coal and oil propelling us to the West and to Texas.

ON my Left along with my heart was NATHAN. Nathan Appleton, Francis Cabot Lowell's cousin, PARTNER and companion before in Scotland and the Midlands of England visiting the Cotton Textile Mills.     And even Russell Sturgis who went off sadly to England NEVER TO RETURN. AND, To my RIGHT THEY were all there Abbott, Amos, J.P., the other Sturgises, P. C. Brooks a vast array.

As we proceeded westward, the train had gone slowly up the gap.
I practiced my Transcendental Meditation and TM - Sidhi Program.
